Dr. Ajay Sharma is having over 22 years’ experience as consultant urologist, working in Reputed Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, which is the largest private multispecialty tertiary care referral hospital in north India.
His laparoscopic career is now about 14 years since he began and for last 2 years he is doing.
He has performed over 1000 laparoscopic operations, including most complex ones like radical prostatectomy, Partial nephrectomy etc.
He was the first Indian surgeon to have performed partial nephrectomy (2004, reported in The Hindu), after his return from cleveland clinic.
He is the leading robotic surgeon in the hospital and the country, and has performed maximum no.of robotic operations in the hospital, and by grace of almighty, there has been no complications. The operations commonly done by robot assisstance are prostate and bladder cancer surgery, pyeloplasty, ureteric reimplantation, Kidney cancer surgery especially partial nephrectomy, VVF repair in females.
Dr. Ajay Sharma has expertise in performing Robotic radical prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy,pyeloplasty. This latest technique has taken the laparoscopy to another lavel, where 3D technology and wristed instruments play a key role. Robotic surgery has replaced simple laparoscopy in USA for these operations .
Dr. Sharma did his medical degree from S.M.S Medical College, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India, and did his masters in Surgery from the same college in 1988. He then did his superspeciality training M.Ch in Urology at BHU Varanasi.
He Visited Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio, USA in 2002 for training in advanced laparoscopic urologic surgery, with Dr. Inderbir Singh Gill, after which he started more complex laparoscopic surgery. This was the time when there were only few such surgeons in the country and the technology was in infancy
In 2005, He visited Institut Mutuliste Montsouris, Paris for training in surgery of prostate cancer ( Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy). The institute is the one where this technique was developed and spread over the world. Since than he performed about 100 laparoscopic radical prostatectomy till end of 2011. Since the beginning of 2012, he shifted to Robotic surgery for operations for prostate cancer.
He is an active member of urological society of India and major association of laparoscopic surgeons like AMASI and IAGES. He has presented his laparoscopic work in most of the conferences and was invited as operative faculty at AMASICON at Kolkata. He is well known laparoscopy and robotic surgeon in urologic society of India.
